G’day mate!
Still in Oz, in Coolangatta at the moment, enjoying the last of the Gold Coast before heading off to Malaysia (which will make my bank account much happier!)
In Byron Bay the Brazilian at the front desk of the YHA let us sneak in to have some free showers and use the kitchen (given the lack fo facilities available in the camper van) and we met a Spanish chica, a guy from Switzerland, and a guy from Italy. We all headed off to the bar together where we watched live the “Goldfish racing world championship” (it was thrilling I assure you…) The next day we were all supposed to meet up to head to the beach together. When we woke up, it was cloudy of course, and John began cursing mother nature for bad beach weather. I told him he better take it back, and not to be cursing her like that. Well he did apologize and th sky did open up to be a beautiful day…but to show her vengeance, he promptly got sun poisoning and bubbled up on his forehead and nose- yowza! Shows ya you shouldn’t be cursing a sista like that…
We slept that night in Shazam in a shopping center parking lot (how glamourous!) and then woke up the next day and went hiking all day in the rainforest. It was so beautiful. There were trees that looked like they were a million feet tall and 10x as wide as me! We hiked around and saw wild kangaroos, hundreds of bats in a cave, glow worms that didn’t glow, 4 ft long snakes..even a guy fighting with a huge snake with a stick (that’s a dif story…). We hiked up a mountain that is supposed to give incredible views of the gold coast..but unfortunately it was too foggy and all we saw was on giant cloud, that we were right in the middle of. Oops. My favorite part was when we were about to leave, we were chatting with a guy, a bit disheveled looking, who leaned over real close and said “hey are you guys interested in some…(expecting he was going to say something scandalous or illegal such as crack or babies on the black market) bioluminescent fungi??!”
Hahaha- and of course the reply was “Hell yeah I am!”
Well we never saw bioluminescent fungi, but we did see some pretty awesome trees, and yes I did hug them :)
After the national parks, we headed back down to Surfer’s Paradise..which is surprisingly a lot like Orlando (complete with a Sea World and a Warner Brother’s Movie World) were to overwhelmed by the shiny lights and headed down to Coolangatta instead. Here they are having the Roxy/Quicksilver International Championship Surf Competition, which is pretty sweet. I don’t know much about surfing, but they are pretty amazing to watch and the people watching at the surf competition is fantastic. I have never seen such a low key and yet so tanned group of people.
We returned Shazam this morning in Brisbane and now are just bumming around til our flight leaves early tomorrow morning. Ozzie has been fun, but I am ready for some adventure.
And yes…the toilets really do flush the other way down here :)
